Engaging STudents in STEM Topics Through Problem-based Learning
Using real-world problems connected to STEM topics offers students opportunities to design solutions to these problems. Participants will learn about problem-based learning units focused on STEM subjects and aligned to the NGSS. The units immerse students in interdisciplinary learning, build critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and encourage students to become more aware of the world around them.

NOTES:
Project "ExCEL & E-Ignite" The ExCEL model --> reactionary rather than forward Students are immersed in problem.. might require empathy or views at different perspectives
PROBLEM BASED LEARNING ARC (below)
Break down text. Develop creative ideas to solve problems.
Learning issues Board (look it up) 4 corner discussions (look it up) |
Multidisciplinary vs Transdisciplinary
Multi- Is like a salad. More than 1... retains individual flavors but is "a salad"
Trans- take things and put them together (information from different disciplines). Take knowledge from different disciplines and combine research to create a real-world product.

Screens in Schools:
Students learn about silicon valley executive investigate why these people send their kids away from tech-heavy schools BEES IN THE CITY: Students are in a stake holder role by installing hives in urban settings (apiary)-
PROBLEM WITH PLASTICS Ordering items off AMazon and the plastic packaging wand what that does in the long-term. Artificial Intelligence Not worked on yet. |
BEES IN THE CITY;
"The Urban Bee"
Students come up with complications to solutions and have a community expert and research time.
They get a whole picture of the scenario that helps them move forward with their solution.
Define key terms, like pollination, keystone species...etc.
Figure out how to education the public and how to address teh issues of problems like bee swarms.
Is your resolution justifiable. using research that they have done.

Buld in different standards within each problem solving unit.

As students encounter research, they have to find correlations and causations throughout the unit.
Students discover interconnectedness "ah ha moments" They need to draw conclusions to help education and persuade the public and approve the project idea. |
